Hugh Partridge
Visual artist
Hugh is a self-taught artist from BC, who often finds his greatest inspiration from everyday surroundings and interactions. Working in a variety of mediums, he will often paint outdoors from observation, a technique that is often referred to as ‘plein air’ painting. His goal is to use artistic expression to capture moments in time that tell a story, inspire, and resonate with people.
In my own words:
My artistic journey began at a very young age. By the age of seven, already showing signs of a keen interest in art, my parents began enrolling me in art classes. I continued to practice and study art at an accelerated pace throughout my childhood, and well into my 20’s. It was clear that artistic expression would always be a big part of who I am.
While earning an Arts and Science degree at the University of Victoria, I continued my self-taught art discipline whenever I had time. During the summer months, I worked as a fishing guide on the West Coast of British Columbia. Working in areas like the Haida Gwai in the Queen Charlottes Islands, the Central and Northern coast, I began to sketch outdoors from life. I felt truly blessed to be sketching in some of the most pristine and diverse marine environments in BC. This practice also made me realize the importance of learning to paint from observation, and finding inspiration from the world around me.
All of these formative experiences shaped me as both an artist and as a person. Now many years later…after several careers in construction and technologies, I am equally as inspired as I was back then to continue to grow as an artist, and as a member of my community.
I am currently an exhibiting member of the Federation of Canadian Artists, and have exhibited in several group shows, locally and abroad.
I believe strongly that my creative journey will never truly end, and I am sincerely honored and humbled to be given the opportunity to share it with others.

My Story
“So much of my journey artistically has to do with where I have travelled, and the amazing people I have met along the way. These are the ingredients that inspire me to create.”
